I love to grocery shop!
When I was little one of my favorite things was to go grocery shopping with my mom. I'm not sure why I loved it so much. Maybe cause I got to spend time with her or cause it was Shopping.
My mom home-schooled me until 2nd grade so there was lots of grocery shopping days. I remember starting school and feeling left out that my sister got to go grocery shopping and I didn't. Whenever Mom would pick me up from school after grocery shopping I would feel so left out. Fortunately, I was home-schooled again in 5th & 6th grade. Grocery shopping was back.
My mom used my interests to guide my lesson plans, so she focused some of my projects around the grocery store. I learned how to check the price per pound to see which size was the better deal. We studied sugar content in cereal and compared it to the price of the cereal. In the 7th grade I used the cereal data for my science project, I think I got a blue ribbon.
So today is Grocery Shopping Day! Every other Friday, Tyrone, Samuel and I head off to my favorite grocery store, Fred Meyer. We shop at the one on Casino Road, the same one my mom and I shopped at when I was little. It's been remodeled twice that I can remember but it still brings back my childhood memories of shopping.
So tonight we'll get in the car with our reusable bags, shopping list and coupons. We'll walk the aisles, check the prices, fill the cart and maybe create some fun memories for Samuel. He'll remember goofy things like how much cereal his dad likes to buy, sometimes 5 boxes in one trip. How we use the calculator on my cell phone to add up every item as we put it in the cart. The excitement of seeing how many coupons we can use and seeing how much we saved. All time high is around $15 in one trip. Someday I'll teach him about price per pound and sugar content in cereal and maybe he'll love grocery shopping as much as I do.

Oh I love this! I never knew you missed grocery shopping when we were kids! I just went grocery shopping too but because I live in such a small town I put my orders through on the computer. Now I just have to wait until Tuesday for them to show up!
ReplyDeleteMy most vivid memory of grocery shopping besides the animal crackers: At the A&P Mom was checking out so I went back to the car. This was an era when nobody locked their cars or worried about having their children kidnapped. I opened the car door and the decor wasn't right at all. I quickly realized we were parked right by another car of the same model and brown exterior. It scared me a bit, but I quickly got in the correct car. When my mom came, I remember watching her make the same mistake! I must have been around 4 to 6.
