Today Samuel is sick, he's got a slight fever and a barking cough. This is only his 2nd fever so he still doesn't understand being sick. Poor thing wanted a nap right after breakfast. So he is napping and I'm watching movies and reminiscing about past sick days.
As a child I got the usual stuff: croup, chicken pox, stomach bugs, colds and flus. I don't remember how bad I felt but I do remember that the rules changed when I was sick.
-- No Soda Rule was broken with flat 7up. To this day drinking 7up makes me feel 5 years old and slightly nauseous.
-- Limited TV Rule was broken with Anne of Green Gables marathon. Anne was replaced with Pride & Prejudice, and today since I don't have a copy of either, I'm watching the Bourne Trilogy.
-- Getting dressed was replaced with fresh jammies.
One of my more vivid sick days was the chicken pox. I remember my grandpa came over so my mom could run a quick errand. We were sitting on the floor under the big picture window at my parent's old house and he was telling me stories of his childhood growing up on the farm. It's like a brief memory snapshot.
One of my favorite sick days I wasn't even sick, my mom and sister were. I can't remember what they had but they camped out in the family room and didn't move. I played maid. What makes this so memorable is that I read to them for about 2 days straight. I read just about every Erma Bombeck book the library had in 2 days. I can't remember if they laughed but I remember that sometimes I had to stop reading because the couldn't understand me anymore. We still talk about this sick day.
One of my worst sick days was the time I didn't get to go to Disneyland. I was in college and my mom and her friend were going for a conference. I hadn't been to Disneyland since the 3rd grade and was so excited. I ended up so sick with something bad, I don't remember what. The worst part was not only did I not get to go but I had to drive them to the airport. I still haven't been to Disneyland or Disney World.
So today I'll hold my little boy close, keep fluids down him and enjoy the cuddles.
Why do toddlers only cuddle when they're sick?

Poor baby. I hope he feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteDid you have pink eye that time when we went to Disneyland or just a really bad cold? it makes me feel bad just thinking about how I left you home so sad and sick, but I loved the Irma experience.
