Proposal Day

Six years ago today, Tyrone proposed.  This is the post from last year and it includes a picture of the ring.

Five years ago today, Tyrone proposed.

Wow has it really been 5 years?  Some days it feels like yesterday.

It was a day much like today, rainy and overcast.  We always had a special date on the 6th of each month since that is the date of our 1st date.  So Tyrone picked me up and we headed off to Edmonds.  I knew we were doing something fun as I had to pack a lunch.  Tyrone had thought about taking the ferry but it was so gray there was nothing to see, so we had a picnic at the beach.

We had walked down quite a ways and sat down on some logs and enjoyed our lunch.  We are sitting there looking at the water and just talking.  After we packed up our lunch, Tyrone says he has something to tell me.  On the drive down I had a brief thought that maybe this was the day, the day he would propose.  All of a sudden I'm sure of it when his first sentence is "I want to make you a promise."

Tyrone does not make promises lightly he won't even use promise as a joke.  In the 8 months we had been dating I think he had promised me one other thing.  So I knew at that point this was it!

After the 'Promise' sentence he drops to his knee and asks me to marry him.  I said YES!

We walked back to the car and I was almost hyperventilating I was so excited.  I loved this man and couldn't wait to spend the rest of my life with him.  We got to the car and he called my mom and handed me his phone.  I couldn't stop smiling.  My mom said she had been talking to my Grandma and they both had wondered if today was the day.

After the beach we headed to Starbucks to warm up.  We both got hot chocolate since no caffeine was needed to be alert.  We were both too excited.

Once back at my parents house I heard the story about how he asked for my parents blessing.  Apparently when Tyrone told them he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, my parents said jokingly "Good, 'cause we don't want to."  My dad told Tyrone that there was a 'No Return Policy' too.

Like any major event in my life I promptly got the flu.  Maybe it was the excitement or the rainy, wet day, but I spend the next 2 days curled up in a ball.  Once back to normal we started telling people and planning.

By now you might be wondering "What about the Ring?"  Tyrone proposed without a ring.  We had gone to a few stores but I didn't like anything.  Even right after he proposed he said we could go look again and buy it today.  I was too picky and said I'd wait until I found the right ring.  Waiting had worked on finding the right guy.

So about a month before our wedding I found the ring.  I wasn't worried about finding one, figuring it would happened eventually.  My mom, sister and I had decided to spend the day in Seattle.  Our favorite area to shop was the SoDo district.  SoDo looks very industrial but has some amazing stores.  There are some fun furniture stores, garden art, and an antique mall.

We had been to the antique mall before and decided to wander around.  I started looking at rings in this one case and one of the workers asks if I'd like to try them on.  I say sure so he goes and gets the key.  The rings were pretty but none were my style so he says this vendor has 8 other cases and he'll go get the keys and we can keep looking.  After the worker comes back he tells me that the vendor is there that day and will meet with me in 10 minuets.  I'm thinking wow I hadn't even got this nice of service at any of the jewelers we had been too.

So 10 min later I'm sitting down with the man who looks like he's 80+ and he has the huge tackle box.  He starts pulling wedding set after wedding set out of the box and letting me try them on.  The third set out of the box was 'my ring.'  This ring was perfect, it was platinum with a diamond that was round but set to look like a princess cut.  I had really wanted a princess cut at first but this ring was prettier than any ring I had seen.

The Ring
I called up Tyrone and said "I found my ring, can I buy it?"  We talked a few minutes and he said I could buy my ring.  The vender said since I was buying it from him he would give me 13% off.  This man was very interesting to talk to, he told me he had just gotten my ring the week before at an estate sale.  The ring is a 1930s Art Deco wedding set and it is gorgeous.  After we got home Tyrone came over to see it and was happy with my choice.  And so was I

The Quest Continues

Today I finally had the right ingredients and enough energy to make Macaroni and Cheese.  After my last my post I started looking for a recipe like my grandmother's.  I knew the basic ingredients she used:  milk, cheese, noodles, and an egg.  So I passed over any recipe that didn't use an egg. After finding quite a few I settled on The Pioneer Women Cooks recipe.   Macaroni and Cheese I followed the recipe exactly and it looked like my grandmas... I even used the same baking dish.  However, it did not taste like Grandma's.  I had baked it for 20 minutes and it just wasn't right so back in the oven it went for another 20.  This time it was more crunchy but still not perfect.  It was too cheesy and the noodles near the edges weren't crunchy and brown.  The egg did blend well but next time I'll use way less cheese.  I know my grandma used Tillamook, which is the best cheese ever, so that wasn't the problem. So now the hunt begins...

Velveeta

I made macaroni and cheese for dinner, again.  This time I took my Aunt's advice and tried Velveeta. Did anyone else eat this as a child?  I have lots of childhood memories around Velveeta.  That is until my mom decided that any cheese that didn't need to be refrigerated was probably really unhealthy.  Up until then it was used in grilled cheese and macaroni and cheese.  Mom let us keep the cool cardboard boxes it came in.  There were used for storing small stuff and other craft project. Tonight I tried the easy recipe on the Velveeta box.  Once I opened up the cheese I thought what am I doing this can't be healthy. It's cheese Product! Once the noodles were cooked and rinsed I added the "cheese."  It did melt quite nicely and didn't have any grease floating at the top.  However, it also didn't have any flavor.  I added more pepper but it still wasn't right. Did I mention it looked like glue? So I put half in the oven to...

Snow Day?

Everyone is talking about snow.  When will it start?  How much will we get?  When will it melt?  Is it spring yet? As I write this it isn't snowing yet, but there are remains of Saturday's snow on the lawn across the street from my treehouse.  The roofs are also partially covered.  I keep hearing that we are getting 3 inches starting at 4pm and ending sometime tomorrow.  All this snow talk has made me remember some of my favorite snow days. January 1985 I'm five years old and I have a new baby sister.  There is lots of snow on our street and in our yard.  Our old house had this amazing yard, it was huge.  There was a greenhouse, large garden, fruit trees, volleyball/badminton court, sandbox, and a huge deck. I remember going out side with my dad and his old sled, the real kind with runners.  He would make the runners slippery by rubbing them with a candle.  We would walk up the little hill by our house and sled down. ...
