Last night we had our 1st Family Movie Night. Samuel can almost sit still for about 30 minutes at a time, so I figured he was ready. We borrowed Cars from my dad and finally got to watch a Blu-Ray movie in our new Blu-Ray player. Cars seemed like Samuel's speed, he loves Thomas and Friends and cars with faces can't be that much different than trains with faces.
Family Movie Night was like embarking on a new adventure, could 3 people with very different tastes and attention spans enjoy the same movie? Turns out we can for about 30 minutes.
At 8:30pm dressed in our PJs we all climbed in to bed and started Cars. Samuel was so cute sitting between Mommy and Daddy. He was watched very intently as the cars raced around the track in the opening credits, he identified the helicopter as an airplane and watched for other things he could name. He tapped his hands to the music and wanted water just like mommy and daddy had. This family bliss lasted for 30 minutes and by then he was done and ready for bed. It was such a sweet memory that I can't wait to repeat.
When I was growing up we watched The Muppet Show on Saturday nights after bath time. This started our family tradition of watching movies or a particular show together. The Muppet Show was Dad's choice and I have since Netflixed some episodes and it is still one of my favorite shows.
The Muppet Show slowly progressed in to renting movies. We only had cable until I was 8, I didn't have cable again until 2 months before Samuel was born. Dad, Annemarie and I would hop in the car and drive to my current neighborhood to the local video store. We would head straight to the Disney section and find something new to watch. There was The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Ugly Dauchsand, Herbie the Love Bug, and many other live action Disney movies. Once it had seemed we rented all the live action ones we found a cool Disney series called 'Five Mile Creek' it took place in Australia the 20s I think. It was a 20 video set and sadly the store shut down when we hit episode 15 or so. Somedays I think of Netflixing it but I'm not sure it would be the same.
Once our Dad had indoctrinated is with all things Muppet and Disney it was time for Action and Musicals. We watched Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, and many others. There were the Comedies: all the Ernst movies, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Home Alone, and more than I can remember.
Mom started participating more in movie night and it expanded to include: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Enchanted April and of course Mom's favorite Christmas movie, A Holiday to Remember with Randy Travis.
We still head over to Mom and Dad's for the occasional Movie Night. Now the movies are viewed thru a projector on a large screen with surround sound. The 'Screen Room' is finally warm thanks to the newish gas fireplace. Most recently it was Pinocchio and Samuel spent most of the time playing blocks with Grandpa in the movie's glow while the rest of us watched.
Even though our 1st Family Movie Night only lasted 30 minutes, I can't wait to create more memories for Samuel. This morning Tyrone said when Samuel woke up he wanted to watch Cars, so Daddy and Samuel watched a few more minutes before Samuel decided it was time for breakfast.
