On Tuesdays I'm answering questions from My Mom. Her Stories. Her Words.

Today's Question

Mom, who were your favorite pets, and what made them special?

What a great question.  I have had 6 cats and 1 dog, and each as has been an adventure.

Pepper I and Pepper II

I don't remember which was first but one was from PAWS and one was from a neighbor's cat.

We went to PAWS to pick out a kitten and found Pepper.  She was black and white with white socks.  I don't think she lasted a year.  Sadly our neighborhood backed up to woods and coyotes lived there.

The next Pepper looked about the same except the socks.  We tried to keep her inside but she escaped one day.

Maxi-Cat, Marshmallow and Cinder

These three cats were litter mates.  We had originally wanted their mother but she wasn't available.  Her kiddos were lots of fun.

Maxi-Cat was the oldest and the biggest but he was also the biggest baby.  If he couldn't find his siblings he would cry and we would have to find the other two and bring them to him.  He grew up to be a beautiful orange cat.

My favorite Maxi-Cat story was during a snow day.  He had climbed on the roof and jumped down on our upstairs deck.  No one was there to let him in so he jumped back on the roof but was to chicken to jump down.  When my dad came home from work there was a cold, mad kitty on the roof.  Being the awesome dad he is, he grabbed a pillow case, the latter, and big plastic gloves and up he went.  Once on the snowy roof he grabbed Maxi and shoved him in the pillow case and quickly handed it to my mom.  It was almost like Santa was on the roof with a kitty.  Mom ran in the house and set the him down and he ran off and hid.

Marshmallow looked like a toasted marshmallow, white with light brown stripes.  He was my cat and slept in my room.  I would dress him up in baby clothes and push him around in the stroller.  I even have a cute picture of him in his sweatshirt, sitting in the highchair eating cat food.

Sadly, Marshmallow disowned me when I got Cash, our dog.  He stopped sleeping with me and even stopped coming downstairs, he thought he'd been replaced by a big noisy dog.  The week Marshmallow passed away he forgave me and let me snuggle with him.

Cinder was a very spicy kitty.  She broke her leg when she was still under a year old and had a hot pink cast.  Once the cast was off she ran away.  She was a beautiful black cat with an orange spot on her head.

Suzy

Suzy was Maxi-Cat, Marshmallow and Cinder's mother.  Once her owners got a dog she was abused and came to live with us.  Sadly, she did not like living with her sons.  She did however rescue Maxi-Cat from an attack by the neighbor cat.  She jumped off our 2nd story deck and scared that mean cat so bad he never messed with her sons again.

Cash

Cash will probably turn up in a lot of my blog posts.  He was a huge part of my live from 14-25.  He was special because he was my baby.

    The MaxiCat on the roof story had me chuckling. It's nice to hear about parts of your life that I'd never knew about before. Aunt LeeAnn

Baking with Samuel

Tonight, Tyrone took Charlotte to run errands, so that left me and Samuel to spend time together.  First we had to clean the kitchen and pick up toys, then it was time to make cookies. Samuel is Ready! Samuel loves cookies and watching me work in the kitchen, so tonight I combined the two to make Snickerdoodles.  I haven't had very good luck making GF Snickerdoodles, they always seemed to run.  One time I improvised and made them in muffin tins, they kinda looked like reverse volcanos.  Thanks to the yummy ones my friend Megan made, I thought I'd give them one more try. I used this recipe from Betty Crocker,  Snickerdoodles , I just modified it with Brown Rice Flour and Xanthan Gum.  I think the Xanthan Gum was key,  I'd been out for a while and finally had some, what a difference. Family Movie Night

Last night we had our 1st Family Movie Night.  Samuel can almost sit still for about 30 minutes at a time, so I figured he was ready.  We borrowed Cars from my dad and finally got to watch a Blu-Ray movie in our new Blu-Ray player.  Cars seemed like Samuel's speed, he loves Thomas and Friends and cars with faces can't be that much different than trains with faces. Family Movie Night was like embarking on a new adventure, could 3 people with very different tastes and attention spans enjoy the same movie?  Turns out we can for about 30 minutes. At 8:30pm dressed in our PJs we all climbed in to bed and started Cars.  Samuel was so cute sitting between Mommy and Daddy.  He was watched very intently as the cars raced around the track in the opening credits, he identified the helicopter as an airplane and watched for other things he could name.  He tapped his hands to the music and wanted water just like mommy and daddy had.  This family bliss laste...

3 Weeks Yesterday...

As of today I have been the mom to two kids for 3 weeks and 1 day. Wow!  There was a point in time where I thought I'd never have kids.  After we got married we still thought we wouldn't have kids.  After a year and a half of blissful married life, we had a miscarriage.  This got us thinking, maybe one kid would be kinda fun.  Samuel was born two months after our 3rd anniversary. Samuel was so much fun.  A cute little person to hold and love, to explore the world through his eyes.  He fit right into our life.  He was almost too relaxed.  Samuel wasn't big on eating so he slept alot and didn't gain much weight at first.  Once we got the weight gain on the right track he was still an awesome sleeper.  He started sleeping through the night at 2 months.  He almost never cried and was happiest playing on the floor. After Samuel turned one, we thought we had this parenting thing figured out, so why not try for another...
